Fuji Fuji New Rangefinder form!

Ken Rockwell has a good piece on the subject of HCB and his Leica:

Cartier-Bresson and the Leica

BTW, I just measured up a Leica IIIc: it comes out a bit bigger than the Fuji - 13.5 cm x 6.9 x 6.1 with a, albeit a Canon. But it also had a very slick 50mm lens that collapsed into the body when not in use, reducing it to about 3 cm. It's pretty heavy by today's standards - even heavier than my old OM-2 and easily twice as much as my Coolpix P5000.

Street photography is one of the applications I'm looking forward to my G12 for - with the fold-out twisty LCD I'll be able to sneak shots from waist-level.

For some reason I thought the X100 used a leaf shutter. Instead, it's a standard shutter. I just hope it's quiet!

vaquey sent me a link to this piece from CNET Asia: 15 Things You May Not Know About the Fujifilm X100. Depending upon how closely one is following multiple news sources and forums, these might be things you don't know. I found the article to be very helpful if only because it lays out the information in an orderly fashion. Herman, you'll be happy to know they mention the Fujiguys and have a video of theirs, too!:D

It's looking good. So, perhaps we should start a pool as to when the camera will be truly on sale? Just kidding, I don't think betting allowed, but we could have a poll. That's only spelled slightly differently from pool.;)

this is the one spec that I find hillarious, and one that will bite Fuji in the end

"There are nine aperture blades in the lens of the FinePix. This allows for smoother blurring of background when using a large aperture, such as F2."

unless Fuji is somehow able to change the laws of physics you just will not get that much bluring or bokeh with a 23mm lens even with f/2, yet they hype that figure over and over again. The only way to get any would be to shoot portraits up close however yet again the 23mm lens will cause issues with distortion of facial figures and you had better make sure that the subjects hands and/or feet are at the same distance as the body or they will look huge and distored

The end result will be when it comes out all the gear head sites will trash it for having poor bokeh, fuji is setting themselves up for bad press

DOF on X100

I don't think Fuji is trying to make out this is a portrait lens with razor thin DOF. If you want that then you shouldn't be buying it! Also, remember than 23mm on APS format is equivalent of 35mm focal lentgh on 35mm, so this is not a strong wide angle lens. Even so, at f2, focused at 5ft the DOF is 13inches deep ( 4ft 6 in to 5ft 7 in), so most moderately distant backgrounds should be rendered out of focus. I would characterise this a street / scene shooting tool, not a portrait camera and I think Fuji has made references to that effect.

a 23mm lens is a 23mm lens, the fact that the sensor is smaller than a piece of 35mm film really has no bearing. The circle of confusion kicks in yes but that has no bearing on objects in the background as that is an artifact of diffusion not focus. One of the advantages of MF was that you could use a 80mm lens and get a normal view like 50mm on 35mm film with much shallower DOF.

This camera will have the same sized sensor as in my Canon 30D. I have a 30mm f/1.8 lens and 24mm f/1.8 lens. I can tell you from experience that while yes the background is not sharp so it is not listed as in focus for the DOF it is far from being out of focus.

Fuji is hyping the shallow DOF in a major way that just will not be there, that is why they have the built in ND filter so you can shoot wide open in brighter light. I agree with you that this is a street/scene shooting tool but it is not being marketed as such and that will disappoint lots of people

I guess I am not paying too much attention to the details - except for the fact that I am interested in what I hope will be top notch image quality due to the sensor, a great lens, straight forward controls - and the hybrid viewfinder. I miss a really good viewfinder.

I'm thinking of this as along the lines of a Leica X1 but with the options I'd had wished it had had. Time will tell and so will hearing and reading and seeing real life results. Come on spring!:D

There are a few more video's on youtube where people actually handle the camera and it looks promising!! I just hope that having a fixed lens and APS-C sensor will create superior image quality.

Fingers crossed!

Why is the Fuji X100 special to you ?

Is it: retro design, going back to the basics of photography, it's hybrid viewfinder, the fixed high quality lens, the price, something else, sensor, tell us !

Thanks for your replies !;)

Photos and pre-order

Just found out about two things this morning. First via Mu43, thanks to Burkey, we've been alerted to the fact that Fuji has posted some of its own photographs with the X100 - with EXIF data. I have only glanced at them so far but will assuredly be going back for more.;)

And I also found out thanks to a link here to the SONY E Mount news to NoisyCameras that the Fuji X100 is now available for pre-order from Amazon for $1200. Of course buyer beware that with Amazon they will only give you 85% of the value of the camera if you have used the camera and are returning it and you'll have to pay for return shipping as long as there was no error in your order.

Herman, I think that many of us have talked about what we're hoping for with this camera in this thread: https://www.photographerslounge.org/f9/fuji-new-rangefinder-form-448/... However, after some of us get our hands on one in real life, this will be an excellent place to extol its virtues I'm sure.

Fingers crossed that the 12.3-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and all the other attributes of this camera will make quite a few of us very happy.;)

Have you seen the samples Fuji have put up? Pretty boring, mostly. You'd have thought they'd got someone to take some inspiring images to help sell the camera.

Back to the question: for me it's special because it has all the external controls and planned out in a familiar and enjoyable fashion. Simple, but rare these days, as we all know. Also, because of the price, because it's Fuji, you expect it to 'feel' really well made, but that's just of course speculation as i don't think anyone has held a production model yet (if they even exist). So quality, simple yet refined design in a small package.
