Sony The NEX Image thread

I have not had a focused opportunity to go take pictures with my new NEX 3, but here are a few from around the yard...

And a couple more.

The NEX is an interesting camera and I see real potential. The ISO performance and dynamic range are excellent. It creates files that are perfect for B&W work, with lots of headroom for manipulation. The menu has improved and is easily learnable once you customize and get to know it. The hinged screen is very useful.

The 18-55mm lens is fine but not great. I'm still getting to know it.

Two weaknesses that I see are the lens selection and the lack of an EVF. The LCD is fantastic, but I prefer an EVF at times. I'm optimistic that in the future Sony will release a high quality EVF or NEX with built-in EVF. And I hope it is not too long before we see a wider selection of lenses with at least a few high quality lenses.

This was to be my family cam but it might get more use than that! I've ordered an adapter so that I can use my Zeiss 50mm C Sonnar lens. That lens renders beautiful in B&W so I'm anxious to try it with the dynamic range of the NEX.

Andrew, all of these from your yard a haunting and beautiful. They remind me of the old silver print days. Actually the first thing that came into my mind when I clicked on your linked page was "Edward Weston".

I'm glad to read your first impressions and will be looking forward to reading more - and seeing more photographs. I have an old photo pal from my college days who is considering buying a micro four thirds but I have told him he ought to check out the NEX line, as well.

Like a companion piece to that big church - similar composition and very nice! I like this heavy contrast processing you've been doing lately. Almost like a lithograph or something.

Thank you, Ray. I did play around with it a bit and have another version in which the sky is not quite so ominous, though the scene itself has always had a rather other worldly look to me, and is not exactly warm and fuzzy. I felt I'd emphasize my feelings through my view this way. If you follow me.

Thanks Ray.... He was a problem.... I saw the image in my mind... framed and his back was to me... I waited around 5 minutes before he turned to me... it lasted a fraction of a second and he never knew I made the image, even after I made the image....

your idea of the tilting screen works when it works... this here is proof....

Don, you already know what I think about 1 and 3 (love them), but I hadn't seen your Civil War soldier checking out the mass transit map before. What can I say? Priceless.

Andrew,

Lovely shot - fine without EVF and if you really need to steady the shot for a slow shutter speed, flip up the screen an anchor it against your belly or waist - every bit as stable as a face!

Her name is Kylie. Normally, her hair is much longer but she ends up bringing in leaves and twigs and branches from the yard, and she gets all matted up if we don't brush daily, so we just had it cut. She gets hot anyway. But she loves to be outdoors. She is a mix... probably part Australian Shepard (active, herds, loves balls), part Landseer (sweet, goofy, loves the water) and part who knows what (she stands up for herself). Very sweet, but getting on in age. She's had a broken toe, one large tumor removed, one small tumor removed but in a location where the wound could not be fully closed thus requiring weeks of careful handling, and she has an auto immune disease and takes about $200-300 dollars a month worth of meds. The things we do...

I really like the flip up/down LCD.
