Fuji Fujifilm Finepix X100 - Pricing, Availability and general OMG

Andy, we here in the colony gave up the old oldt way....
We reinvented the wheel, time, dates and the economy...
That's we are in such a mess....

Seriously, Bill asked me to pay attention to the date thing.
I will from now on....

OK this is not an April Fool's post... I have to keep myself in the loop, so I just found an update on Brandon Reimer's blog Thoughts From My Camera regarding the delivery schedule for the USA: Fujifilm FinePix X100 USA Delivery Update which makes it sound as though it's going to be towards the end of April.

Perhaps yours will arrive before then, Jon.;)

P.S. Time for me to bid you goodnight...and I guess I'll have to wait to see if you do end up opening up that box...on April 2nd.:D

Yes, I read that Wednesday, not what I wanted to hear. Though DPReview says production and shipments are resuming and should be in stores beginning of April. Canadians are getting their X100 this week. Only hold up seems to be US and Fuji is being pretty silent on this except for Brandon's post.

Enticing the Light - Ian Wilkinson, X100 review - Pt2: Shooting Children

I took the camera to my daughter’s friend’s birthday party and it makes me very sad to say the AF struggles with moving kids. I’d say the success rate at f/2.8 was less than 50%, maybe even 30%. I tried a mixture of single shot and continuous drive, and whilst continuous does do continuous AF to a degree, you would never use this camera to track a bride and groom moving down the aisle. I’m sure you get the occasional shot in focus but other than using zone focusing there are going to be times on a wedding this camera isn’t going to cut it. Shooting at f/5.6 was enough to noticeably increase the success rate.

Well, it's not "the answer for everything" yet ;-). By which I mean I'd still like one, but it would have to be for hobby/fun/family/casual stuff - which don't get me wrong isn't a BAD thing at all, that's where I see something like this fitting perfectly. I guess I've just fallen for the idea of a 'system' from something smaller like this that I want more, although as already discussed I didn't expect it to be lightning quick. I guess for me a NEX-7 type camera looks more likely over the next 10 months or so.

Actually the Nex is the perfect sister camera for the Fuji.
Similar sensor and it offers interchangeable lenses.
Waiting for the Fuji is why I moved to the Nex 5. For me, it was a very good move.

I received an email from DigitalRev yesterday saying they have the X100 in stock. When I went to their site it was priced at $1899 (US). This morning on their site it is priced at $2190 (US). These are price gouging amounts. I have lost all respect for DigitalRev and will no longer use their site. People taking advantage of the present situation to such an outlandish degree should be recognized for what they are by the photographic community!

Thanks for the comment Streetshooter. I also am moving toward the NEX 5 and appreciate the good reviews (and criticisms) I have seen on this site about the Sony. I have pre-ordered the X100 so it will be interesting to see if B&H and Adorama try price gouging. I think they will not, but we shall see.

I don't believe that either B&H or Adorama would do that. They have the prices listed now and then for those who pre-ordered it is the agreed upon price, which is the same as the listed one. Keep the faith Country Parson! I know that I am, even though I am a bit impatient, sometimes.;)

Country, I use the Nex 5 along with many here. You will not regret getting one.
To be honest, it's an ugly little thing but sure turns out pretty images.
The plus side is, if you like I and that BB women get the X100, the Nex is the perfect companion camera.

I almost hate to tell people this, given how excited some of you are about this camera. But I should have one early next week. A cousin in the Montreal area was one of those lucky Canadians who got his in the batch of Canadian cams that went out late last week - he had pre-orders in at a couple of shops and both of them shipped at the same time, so he didn't have time to cancel one. I've seen similar stories on the dpreview forum co-minled with all of the angry Canucks who got none but had put in their orders before some of the folks who got two. It seems a lot of people are not happy with Henry's, who took pre-orders in both online and OTC and filled only online ones, even if they came in well after some of the OTC orders - I'd be pissed too. Anyway, he got them last Friday. He likes his, with reservations, and his son doesn't have any interest in the other one after playing with it for a couple of days. So I'm getting the second one! I should get it early to middle of next week. I'm not sure on the US warranty part of it, but if worse comes to worse, I can send it back to him and have it serviced in Canada. Hopefully the'll honor it here. More hopefully, it'll be an academic question! He's checked it out and neither of them had the problem with the tilted OVF so I have that assurance. As for the little niggling things, I'll just have to see for myself...

We're leaving for a week in Jamaica at the end of next week. I'm going to take this as my primary camera and either the Nex or the LX-5 along as backup (and if I really feel the need for a bit of versatility). I'm psyched, sort of, but feel a bit funny because so many are losing sleep over this camera and I'm not much more than curious at this point. Hopefully I'll have time to offer some initial impressions next week with a full report when we get back the week of the 24th. Although by then, hopefully a lot of you will have them as well.

-Ray
