An informal comparison between the new Lomography Jupiter-3+ and a wartime CZJ 5cm F1.5 Sonnar "T" in Leica mount at the Manassas Battlefield.

Manassas National Battlefield Park (U.S. National Park Service)

Notice that there none of the pictures have any people in them... It was very cold and windy, too cold for a Tripod. I walked around with the Jupiter-3+ and then made a second round with the Sonnar. Shot each at F1.5 and F4. Most -not all- F1.5 shots are at ISO 80, 1-stop pull on the M9. The glass on the 1943 Sonnar is perfect, I rebuilt this lens. Both lenses used with UV filters and a Hood.

Similar shots, not the same between the two lenses. Again- cold and windy, and done quickly.

    Jupiter-3+ at F1.5,

    And the Sonnar at F1.5

    And the Sonnar at F4,

The original Jupiter-3 is based on the wartime Sonnar, which has an improved optical prescription compared with the pre-war Sonnars. All of the wartime Sonnars are fully coated, and use an allow barrel and focus mount. The mount itself is fragile compared with the Jupiter-3. But- it is made to the Leica standard and will focus correctly across the entire distance range. They are rare, and one in this condition now costs more than the Jupiter-3+.

    More with the Jupiter-3+ Here:

    Manassas Battlefield Jupiter-3+

    And the Sonnar here:

    Manassas Battlefield 1943 Sonnar T 5cm F1.5

"Pixel Peeping" in Lightroom- I would call it an Optical Tie. Build Quality is far better with the Jupiter-3, and the design of the focus mount is improved. These days, cheaper than the Sonnar. But I would not trade THIS Sonnar for anything, would never get another as good.
