Decided to try out a Petzval. Have not had the chance to try the lens out yet but here is what it looks like mounted to a Leica M.

Now that looks like it is out of the 19th century! Rack and Pinion focus.

    Let's see pictures!

    I need to do that with a 4cm F1.4 Biotar. From 1928.

I tried shooting a few shots this morning with the Leica M. I find the handling of this lens with the M really uncomfortable. It was hard to get use to. Needless to say, I couldn't find a good image from that set. So I mounted the lens to the Lumix G1. I find the handling a little better. Here are a few image from the G1 and the Petzval.

Thank you Vince. It is the joy of using such non-standard lenses that make it all worthwhile.

It sure is. It was freezing outside but decided to ask the kids to have a little fun outside at the same time, for me to try the lens out some more. Here are a few I took using the Leica M.

The last set looks great- did you get used to handling it on the Leica M? Do you have the EVF for the Leica?

It was not easy getting use to focusing this lens. I think if I have the M grip, it would help greatly. The focusing is also a bit touchy. I did use the EVF with it.

I use focus confirmation on the Nikon Df a lot, especially for fast telephoto lenses. I do not always use it, with moving subjects rely on the old-fashioned "Focus Screen E" skills learned with the Nikon F2. Matte screen, lines- no microprism. Just like the Df. I find focusing with the Df to be easier than using the EVF on the Olympus u43 cameras.

The matte screen is definitely easier than EVF. The EVF is quite slow with the M. After pressing the shutter, it take about a second or two for the screen to come back. There were several instance where I was going to press the shutter twice but ended up taking only one because the camera is just not ready. I think my old Lumix G1 is quicker in this respect than the M.

You have to transmit a lot of data over a serial line to get that image to the EVF. Also- the shutter has to stay open as it is running, close- take the picture, then open again. It's a lot of work. I understand why Leica did this, offered a "Viso-flex" for R-Mount lenses. I think this technology will get better, but at some point: data can only be transmitted so quickly before producing a lot of excess noise and drain on the battery. Stupid Laws of Physics.

Decided to give it more camera time so I took it out last weekend and used it exclusively. I still don't like the ergonomics that much. I wish the focus travel is not as short as it is, after all we are talking about a portrait lens with shallow DOF. Swirly bokeh is a taste preference, very subjective. All were taken with the Leica M.

The Luxon 50/2 that Brian modified from Braun Paxette mount to ltm has a similar looking wild OOF rendering.
