I just bought a hacked Schneider Retina Xenon 50mm 2.8 in LTM mount and not in M mount.

I read some old RFF threads on the Xenar and Xenon lenses, and it seems that the Xenon is a very good lens. With shipping, it cost me less than $170, while a similar lens is selling for over $1300.

This is "my lens" shown below. I love one of a kind hacked lenses. Do you by any chance own such a lens on a Retina camera, and could you share here your experience with it. Thanks.

I wonder how this lens renders, in comparison with the (old) Elmar 50 2.8. My example is RF coupled, and it is uncoated.

    From ad :
The focusing scale is stamped into the mounting ring.
The lens is rangefinder coupled and activates the rangefinder as it is focused.
    It is uncoated glass.

I have the 5cm F2.8 on my Retina IIC- and it is first rate. I use the 50/1.9 Xenon on my Nikon Df- as good as a Summicron.

I hacked the 5-element 50/2.8 Xenar into LTM, and it is really good- better than the 5cm F2.8 Tessar.

I suspect the Xenon is better, the "Xenon" name is the next notch up.

I am glad that I listened to you, Brian, and I bought it. Thanks.
In Rolleiflex TLR cameras, the Xenotar is a step above the Xenar, but there sre many who favor the Tessar formula.

Do you have a Retina to Nikon adapter?

I bought the Retina to Nikon adapter, was ~$50 or so. It does a good job on the Df, the focus is "just shy" of infinity, but DOF at F2.8 covers it.

Thanks for the tip on the adapter. I have several Retina lenses that could use some use again on digital cameras (this time).

My lens finally arrived yesterday. I took two snapshots with it, and the results were horrible. There is a lot of haze inside the lens.

I'm sorry to hear that. Is it returnable?

If not- it looks like it unscrews, unless it has been hacked together to not come apart.

How did they do the RF coupling?

The seller gave me back $30 to be used towards the cleaning.
It comes apart in 3 or 4 pieces, so I am hopeful that it can be cleaned.

The RF coupling must be done via one of these parts.

The front glass seems to have been "polished many times with sand paper", I was told today by the repairman. Now I need to find a Xenon front glass.

The pre-war F2.8 Xenon is a different design than the post-war lens. I wonder if the threading on the tube would work with an F2 Xenon. I'll check my Bin.

That would be super, Brian. I also got this idea.

I tried using the lenses from my Retina Ib, IIa, and IIiC. They don't fit the mount. Then I found a Steinheil lens for the Retina. It fits the mount, but it may need some shimming.

That is good to know. If the barrel with the glass installed unscrews from the mount, making a shim is easy. I end up using copper wires for some of them.

Maybe I should send it to you for "resort treatment"?

I have sent you an email. It is more about which parts you need from me.

    Thanks.
