I'm having a stretch of bad luck here. First I bought a used 90mm Summarit that frontfocuses big time. Now today I received a Zeiss 18mm f/4 ZM that rattles like it has a screw loose inside:

The seller offered to take it back and do a refund, and I am planning to accept that offer, but part of me wants to just keep it and live with the rattle. If it takes sharp pictures, what are the odds that something is really wrong?

Unless you got it at an absolute steal, I would return it. Figure the cheapest to have someone open and fix any issue assuming no parts is involved is around $100 + shipping.

    Update:

I just noticed that the rattle is very muffled when I put the front
cap on. A little more investigation showed that it is the black front
piece that is rattling as you can see in this video:

I applied careful, firm inward and clockwise pressure on the black
front piece, thinking that perhaps it screws in. Indeed it seemed to
rotate a fraction of a millimeter, and it no longer rattles!

As far as I am concerned, this lens is fixed .
